How to play lacrosse defense and win.

If you have seen Glory Road, you know that defense is what win’s the game. This is doublely true for lacrosse. At one point in the game every player needs to play lax defense well in order to win any significant game. The following are a few golden rules that will enable you to improve your game:

1) Always stay between your man and the goal. Positioning is very important. It helps to be fit and coordinated so you don’t get beat. Run on the treadmill, run the bleachers, whatever it takes. If the other guy is more tired than you, he won’t get past. Your feet should always be moving. Make sure you stay on the balls of your feet. This will allow you to react a lot faster and stay with your man. My first coach used to always say stick to him like stink on poop. For some reason, I never forgot that.

2) Keep your stick on your man. Find out if he is left or right handed. Force him to go to his weak side and than strip the ball. If you keep your eye on his waist you won’t get faked. Poke checks are great, aim for the bottom hand or the middle of the stick. Some experts suggest that you poke at the bottom hand and then lift up forcing them to lose control of the ball. Slap checks or rap checks work the best if you are hitting a moving target. Be careful not to give up positioning for a stick check.

3) Communicate. It is hard to know what is going on if you are not constantly communicating. Communication will bring you closer together as a team and you will commit less mistakes playing lax defense. Also sounding tough on defence is a good way to intimidate other team’s players. When players get beat they should yell switch. Also make sure to call at screen and also make sure you know where the ball is at all times.

4) As a midfielder playing lacrosse defense, force your opponent to the wings you may be able to trap him or force him to go out of bounds. This also limits your opponent’s options for both passing and shooting. As a defender, keep an attack man with as small of a shooting angle as possible. This means forcing him down towards the goal line.

Much more to come very shortly. We are also looking forward to having videos to demonstrate all about lacrosse defense techniques.
